“My engaged ethnographic research on Black community doulas in South Carolina was born out of my deep admiration for community health care.
In collaboration with a birth justice organization in my home state, I examine how viewing the work of community doulas in the same framing as traditional birth workers disregards key aspects of what makes their work powerful and impactful.
Through engaged methods I highlight how the work of these Southern, Black doulas can inform what it means to turn to community-centered care practices in light of the country’s maternal mortality crisis.”
